Mundane Elucidation Series
Where is holiness found?
Cathedrals-- the sleek stained glass illuminating the floors of marble, gilded jewel tones flashing through quiet, incensed spaces? Modern megachurches --neon lights blazing through dark smoke onto shimmering electric guitars?
Expansive mountain vistas, roaring waterfalls?
Can it be found in the mundane, the ugly or uninviting spaces? In the dirt and dust and unwanted mess we struggle to see as purposeful, much less vital?
Is it in the small spaces, or in the things we don’t even have the capability to perceive?
What if the holy is in the meek? As humble as dust that floats in motes, reflecting the sun into an atmosphere of blue sky. Invisible insects that clean the messes left in forgotten corners. The bottom of the food chain in many forms—providing air and food and life. Sustaining.
These Mundane Elucidations take the form of mandalas. Each sacred circle is made from scanning electron micrographs of mighty and minuscule wonders of our world: plankton from the Carolina marsh, dust from the wings of the moth on the porch light, antennae of insects swept out from under the rug.
